The Fort Wayne end
Picking up a vehicle in Fort Wayne
Fort Wayne is flat, gridded and ringed by I-469, which makes it one of the easier mid-size metros in the Midwest for a full-size transporter to work. Pickup planning here comes down to neighborhood age and street width.
Highway access
Fort Wayne sits on I-69, with US-30 and US-24 crossing the metro and the I-469 beltway circling the east and south sides. Southbound carriers leave on I-69 to Indianapolis and pick up I-65 to Louisville. The practical staging areas are the commercial corridors - Coliseum Boulevard and Coldwater Road on the north side, Illinois Road on the southwest, and the US-24 frontage toward New Haven - wide, commercially zoned and easy for a transporter to enter and exit.
Streets and neighborhoods
The newer growth areas - Aboite Township, the southwest subdivisions along Illinois Road, Dupont Road and the north side, and Georgetown - have the wide, level subdivision streets a carrier can load on without drama. The older central neighborhoods are the exception: West Central, Forest Park and the blocks near the St. Marys, St. Joseph and Maumee river confluence have narrower streets, on-street parking and mature canopy below a transporter's 13-foot-6 height, so a nearby meeting point is sometimes the better plan.
Gated and private communities
Fort Wayne has a small number of gated developments - Sycamore Hills, the gated golf community on the southwest side, is the best known - and some association streets restrict commercial trucks or limit standing time. Where those rules apply we plan around them rather than test them on pickup day.
Alternate meeting points
When a truck cannot safely reach the door, we agree a nearby location in advance - the large lots around Glenbrook Square on Coldwater Road, the Jefferson Pointe retail area on Illinois Road, or the commercial frontage off I-469 and US-24 are common choices on their respective sides of the metro. It takes a few extra minutes of your time and costs nothing additional.
Winter matters here. Northeast Indiana gets meaningful snow and ice from December through February, and a carrier will not load on an icy grade or a snowed-in street. A clear, level stretch of curb or driveway apron makes the difference between loading that morning and rescheduling.
Ship the car, fly down
Fort Wayne airports and the snowbird pattern
Most seasonal residents on this route do not drive 1,250 miles. They send the vehicle and fly.
Fort Wayne residents fly out of Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA), about 15 minutes southwest of downtown off Airport Expressway. Allegiant runs nonstop service from FWA to Punta Gorda (PGD), which suits Cape Coral and north Lee County arrivals, and one-stop connections reach Southwest Florida International (RSW) in Fort Myers. Smith Field and the county fields around northeast Indiana serve private aviation.
The practical sequence is simple: hand the vehicle over in Fort Wayne a few days before you fly, travel with luggage only, and have the car delivered at or shortly after your arrival. River Valley Auto Transport does not provide airline or airport transportation - we time the vehicle around your flight, and someone you authorize can release or receive it if your dates do not line up exactly.
If you are arriving at RSW, our RSW airport auto transport page covers the arrivals-side logistics in detail.
Route
Fort Wayne to Southwest Florida auto transport route
The drive is roughly 1,250 road miles to the Naples and Marco Island end of the corridor, a little less to Fort Myers and Cape Coral. Once a carrier has loaded, plan on about three to four days of driving time; the pickup window, not the highway, is the part that varies.
Carriers typically leave Fort Wayne on I-69 to Indianapolis, take I-65 through Louisville, connect to I-75 through Lexington, Knoxville and Chattanooga, cross Atlanta, then run the length of Florida to the Gulf Coast exits - Fort Myers and Estero off I-75, then Bonita Springs and Naples, with Marco Island the final leg south of Naples. We cannot guarantee the exact route any given carrier takes; drivers route around weather, construction and the other vehicles already on the trailer.
Seasonal weather
Northeast Indiana snow and ice from December through February, and the Kentucky and Tennessee grades after a winter storm, are the usual causes of a delay on this lane. Florida's summer is the opposite problem: afternoon storms slow the last few hundred miles, and hurricane season can close a delivery window entirely.
Seasonal traffic
Southbound demand out of northeast Indiana builds through October and peaks in November. Northbound out of Southwest Florida peaks in April. In both peaks, pickup windows widen and pricing follows the demand, which is why booking early is worth more than negotiating late.

Fort Wayne → Southwest Florida
The heavy direction from mid-October through December. Pick up in Fort Wayne before the first hard freeze if you can, keep a two-to-three-day pickup window, and book three to six weeks out. Delivery lands in Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral or Marco Island.
Southwest Florida → Fort Wayne
The return half runs March through May, with April the busiest month of the year out of Collier and Lee counties. Booking in February or early March consistently beats calling in April. Delivery back to Fort Wayne is subject to the same street-access planning as pickup.
Southwest Florida
Delivering a vehicle on the Gulf Coast
The last mile in Southwest Florida is a different problem from the highway. Gates, guardhouses, tree canopy and community roads decide how a delivery actually goes.
Naples
For a Fort Wayne arrival, Naples deliveries require advance gate clearance in many private communities; restricted streets are handled at a safe nearby meeting point.
Bonita Springs
Bonita Springs sits between Naples and Estero, with practical carrier staging along Bonita Beach Road and US-41 when a neighborhood limits truck access.
Estero
Estero is reached directly from I-75 at Corkscrew Road. Commercial areas near the interstate can provide an alternative handoff location for gated addresses.
Fort Myers
Fort Myers is the principal Lee County delivery point. Low tree canopy along parts of McGregor Boulevard can require a different meeting location for a full-size carrier.
Cape Coral
Cape Coral's canal system creates narrow residential streets and tight turning areas, so drivers may arrange delivery along a wider arterial such as Del Prado Boulevard.
Marco Island
Marco Island is the southernmost stop on this route. Bridge access and compact island streets make an agreed staging location especially important before arrival.
Access
Auto transport to gated communities
For the Fort Wayne route, most delivery problems on this corridor are access problems, and nearly all of them are avoidable with a phone call before dispatch rather than a negotiation at the gate.
- Gate access and security: For the Fort Wayne route, many Southwest Florida communities require the resident to add the carrier to a visitor list, and some require a driver's licence check at the guardhouse. We supply the driver and truck details in advance so you can clear them.
- HOA restrictions: For the Fort Wayne route, a number of associations prohibit commercial vehicles above a certain length or weight, or restrict them to specific hours. Those rules are the association's to enforce and we do not ask a driver to break them.
- Truck size: For the Fort Wayne route, a loaded open carrier is about 75 feet long and 13 feet 6 inches tall and needs somewhere to stop, unload and leave without reversing blind through a residential street.
- Streets and clearance: narrow lanes, speed tables, roundabouts, low banyan and oak canopy and tight cul-de-sacs are the usual blockers, in Fort Wayne's older neighborhoods just as much as in Naples.
- Safe meeting locations: For the Fort Wayne route, where access is not possible we agree a legal, well-lit nearby spot with room to unload, and the driver calls ahead to confirm timing.
We confirm access before the driver is dispatched. We never guarantee entry into any private community - that decision belongs to the association, not to us. More on gated community delivery

We evaluate carriers and arrange your shipment; a separate, federally licensed trucking company physically moves the vehicle, carries the cargo insurance on it and issues the Bill of Lading. Snowbird vehicle shipping from Fort Wayne
Scheduling the shipment
Give us your preferred week rather than a single date. A two-to-three-day pickup window is what lets us place your vehicle with a carrier already running the lane instead of paying for a special trip.
Flying instead of driving
Hand the car over before you fly out of FWA, land at Punta Gorda or RSW, and meet the vehicle in Florida. No two-day drive, no hotel, no winter weather on the road.
Seasonal demand
October to December southbound and March to May northbound are the peaks. Booking three to six weeks out in those windows is the single biggest thing you control.
Preparing the vehicle
Quarter tank of fuel or less, wash it so existing damage is visible at inspection, disable toll transponders and alarms, note any leaks, and remove the garage remote and parking passes.
Personal items
Carriers are licensed to haul vehicles, not household goods, and personal items are not covered by cargo insurance. Follow our existing policy for what may stay in the vehicle, and ask us before assuming anything else can travel.
Delivery day
The driver calls ahead to confirm timing and access. You or an authorized person inspects the vehicle against the bill of lading before signing, in daylight wherever possible.
Planning the whole season? Snowbird Transportation Center and the 12-month shipping calendar cover timing in more depth, and open versus enclosed transport explains which trailer suits your vehicle.
How we work
What happens before your vehicle is loaded
Carrier and insurance verification
We check active USDOT and MC operating authority and safety history, and obtain a certificate of insurance issued by the insurer rather than forwarded by the driver, before a carrier is assigned to your vehicle. How we verify carriers
Inspection and bill of lading
Condition is documented and signed at pickup and again at delivery. Keep your copy - the bill of lading is the document that matters if anything is ever disputed. About the bill of lading
Identity and communication
For the Fort Wayne route, the driver's identity and truck details are confirmed to you before pickup, and you deal with the same owner-operated office from quote to delivery rather than a rotating call centre.
Customer data protection
Your details are used to arrange your shipment. We do not sell or broadcast your information to a bidding pool of brokers. Our privacy-first approach
