The Boston end

Picking up a vehicle in Boston

Boston pickup planning comes down to one question: inside the city, or in the 128 belt? The two are different jobs for a transporter.

Highway access

Greater Boston is ringed by I-95/Route 128 and the outer I-495 belt, with the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) running west through Framingham and Natick and I-93 running north–south through the city toward Quincy and Braintree. Southbound carriers join I-95 at the belt and head through Providence - which is one reason a suburban pickup in Dedham or Westwood is simpler than a downtown one: the truck is already on its corridor before it reaches you.

City neighborhoods versus suburbs

Boston proper is a colonial-era street grid: the North End, Beacon Hill and parts of Back Bay and the South End have narrow blocks, sharp corners and dense on-street parking, and downtown tunnels impose height and weight limits on large trucks. The suburbs are the opposite - driveways, wider subdivision streets and easy belt-highway access in Newton, Wellesley, Weston, Needham, Lexington, Burlington, Framingham and Quincy. The one suburban issue is canopy: mature oaks and maples on older streets often hang below a carrier's 13-foot-6 height.

Gated and private communities

Eastern Massachusetts has far fewer gated developments than Southwest Florida - this is not a guardhouse region. What exists is concentrated outside Route 128: the Pinehills in Plymouth, a large gated master-planned community on the South Shore, and golf-club neighborhoods such as The International in Bolton. Association rules in those communities are checked before dispatch rather than tested at the entrance.

Alternate meeting points

When a truck cannot safely reach the door, we agree a nearby location in advance - the large retail lots at Legacy Place in Dedham, the Natick Mall off the Turnpike, Patriot Place in Foxborough, Assembly Row in Somerville or the Burlington Mall district are common choices on their respective sides of the metro. It takes a few extra minutes of your time and costs nothing additional.

Winter matters here more than almost anywhere else on our network. A single nor'easter between November and March can bury curbs, narrow already-tight streets and make a hillside driveway unloadable. Southbound pickups scheduled ahead of the first storm go smoothly; pickups rescheduled from inside a storm week do not.

Ship the car, fly down

Boston airports and the snowbird pattern

Most Boston-area seasonal residents do not drive 1,500 miles. They send the vehicle and fly.

Boston residents fly out of Logan International Airport (BOS), which has nonstop service to Southwest Florida International (RSW) in Fort Myers - about as direct a snowbird routing as exists in the country. Worcester Regional (ORH) adds seasonal nonstops to Southwest Florida for MetroWest households, and Hanscom Field (BED) in Bedford handles private aviation for the western suburbs.

The practical sequence is simple: hand the vehicle over in the Boston area a few days before you fly, travel with luggage only, and have the car delivered at or shortly after your arrival. River Valley Auto Transport does not provide airline or airport transportation - we time the vehicle around your flight, and someone you authorize can release or receive it if your dates do not line up exactly.

If you are arriving at RSW, our RSW airport auto transport page covers the arrivals-side logistics in detail.

Route

Boston to Southwest Florida auto transport route

The drive is roughly 1,500 road miles to the Naples and Marco Island end of the corridor, a little less to Fort Myers and Cape Coral. Once a carrier has loaded, plan on about three to four days of driving time; the pickup window, not the highway, is the part that varies.

This is the full East Coast run: I-95 south through Providence, the New York metro - where carriers route around the congestion, often on the I-287 Cross Westchester alternative - Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond and Savannah, then into Florida at Jacksonville. From there the usual choice is Florida's Turnpike toward Orlando and I-75 south to the Fort Myers, Estero and Naples exits, with Bonita Springs and Marco Island the final legs. We cannot guarantee the exact route any given carrier takes; drivers route around weather, construction and the other vehicles already on the trailer.

Seasonal weather

New England nor'easters from November through March are the usual southbound delay - a truck will not load on a snowed-in street. Mid-Atlantic and Washington congestion, and Florida's afternoon storms and hurricane season, affect the rest of the run. Hurricane evacuations can close a delivery window entirely.

Seasonal traffic

Southbound demand out of New England builds from late September and peaks in October and November - earlier than the Midwest because the first snow arrives sooner. Northbound out of Southwest Florida peaks in April. In both peaks, pickup windows widen and pricing follows the demand, which is why booking early is worth more than negotiating late.

Both directions

Southbound in fall, northbound in spring

Boston → Southwest Florida

The heavy direction from late September through December. Pick up in the Boston area before the first hard freeze or nor'easter if you can, keep a two-to-three-day pickup window, and book three to six weeks out. Delivery lands in Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral or Marco Island.

Southwest Florida → Boston

The return half runs March through May, with April the busiest month of the year out of Collier and Lee counties. Booking in February or early March consistently beats calling in April. Delivery back to the Boston area is subject to the same street-access planning as pickup, plus New England's mud-and-frost spring.

Southwest Florida

Delivering a vehicle on the Gulf Coast

The last mile in Southwest Florida is a different problem from the highway. Gates, guardhouses, tree canopy and community roads decide how a delivery actually goes.

Naples

For a Boston arrival, Naples deliveries require advance gate clearance in many private communities; restricted streets are handled at a safe nearby meeting point.

Bonita Springs

Bonita Springs sits between Naples and Estero, with practical carrier staging along Bonita Beach Road and US-41 when a neighborhood limits truck access.

Estero

Estero is reached directly from I-75 at Corkscrew Road. Commercial areas near the interstate can provide an alternative handoff location for gated addresses.

Fort Myers

Fort Myers is the principal Lee County delivery point. Low tree canopy along parts of McGregor Boulevard can require a different meeting location for a full-size carrier.

Cape Coral

Cape Coral's canal system creates narrow residential streets and tight turning areas, so drivers may arrange delivery along a wider arterial such as Del Prado Boulevard.

Marco Island

Marco Island is the southernmost stop on this route. Bridge access and compact island streets make an agreed staging location especially important before arrival.

Access

Auto transport to gated communities

For the Boston route, most delivery problems on this corridor are access problems, and nearly all of them are avoidable with a phone call before dispatch rather than a negotiation at the gate.

  • Gate access and security: For the Boston route, many Southwest Florida communities require the resident to add the carrier to a visitor list, and some require a driver's licence check at the guardhouse. We supply the driver and truck details in advance so you can clear them.
  • HOA restrictions: For the Boston route, a number of associations prohibit commercial vehicles above a certain length or weight, or restrict them to specific hours. Those rules are the association's to enforce and we do not ask a driver to break them.
  • Truck size: For the Boston route, a loaded open carrier is about 75 feet long and 13 feet 6 inches tall and needs somewhere to stop, unload and leave without reversing blind through a residential street.
  • Streets and clearance: narrow lanes, speed tables, roundabouts, low banyan and oak canopy and tight cul-de-sacs are the usual blockers - in Boston's North End and Beacon Hill just as much as in Naples.
  • Safe meeting locations: For the Boston route, where access is not possible we agree a legal, well-lit nearby spot with room to unload, and the driver calls ahead to confirm timing.

We confirm access before the driver is dispatched. We never guarantee entry into any private community - that decision belongs to the association, not to us. More on gated community delivery

How we verify carriers · Fraud prevention centre · Broker vs. carrier explained

Seasonal residents

Snowbird vehicle shipping from Boston

Scheduling the shipment

Give us your preferred week rather than a single date. A two-to-three-day pickup window is what lets us place your vehicle with a carrier already running the lane instead of paying for a special trip.

Flying instead of driving

Hand the car over before you fly out of Logan, land at RSW, and meet the vehicle in Florida. No 1,500-mile drive, no I-95 beach traffic, no nor'easter on the road.

Seasonal demand

Late September to December southbound and March to May northbound are the peaks - and New England's southbound peak starts earlier than the Midwest's. Booking three to six weeks out in those windows is the single biggest thing you control.

Preparing the vehicle

Quarter tank of fuel or less, wash it so existing damage is visible at inspection, disable toll transponders and alarms, note any leaks, and remove the garage remote and parking permits.

Personal items

Carriers are licensed to haul vehicles, not household goods, and personal items are not covered by cargo insurance. Follow our existing policy for what may stay in the vehicle, and ask us before assuming anything else can travel.

Delivery day

The driver calls ahead to confirm timing and access. You or an authorized person inspects the vehicle against the bill of lading before signing, in daylight wherever possible.

Planning the whole season? Snowbird Transportation Center and the 12-month shipping calendar cover timing in more depth, and open versus enclosed transport explains which trailer suits your vehicle.

How we work

What happens before your vehicle is loaded

Carrier and insurance verification

We check active USDOT and MC operating authority and safety history, and obtain a certificate of insurance issued by the insurer rather than forwarded by the driver, before a carrier is assigned to your vehicle. How we verify carriers

Inspection and bill of lading

Condition is documented and signed at pickup and again at delivery. Keep your copy - the bill of lading is the document that matters if anything is ever disputed. About the bill of lading

Identity and communication

For the Boston route, the driver's identity and truck details are confirmed to you before pickup, and you deal with the same owner-operated office from quote to delivery rather than a rotating call centre.

Customer data protection

Your details are used to arrange your shipment. We do not sell or broadcast your information to a bidding pool of brokers. Our privacy-first approach

Questions

Boston to Southwest Florida, answered

Who ships cars from Boston to Naples?
River Valley Auto Transport arranges vehicle transportation from Boston and eastern Massachusetts to Naples and the rest of Southwest Florida. We are an owner-operated, federally licensed and bonded auto transport broker (USDOT #2273104, MC #774106), the Midwest division of Enterprise Auto Transport, which is BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, and based in Rosemount, Minnesota, where Midwest-origin shipments are coordinated. We are not the trucking company; we place your vehicle with a qualified, insurance-verified motor carrier and stay with the shipment from pickup to delivery.
Can I ship my car to Florida and fly down?
Yes, and that is how most Boston-area seasonal residents do it. Your vehicle is picked up at your home, you fly out of Logan International (BOS) - which has nonstop service to Southwest Florida International (RSW) in Fort Myers - and the car is delivered after you arrive. Worcester Regional (ORH) adds seasonal nonstops to Southwest Florida, and Hanscom Field (BED) serves private aviation. We do not provide airline or airport transportation - we simply time the vehicle so it reaches you near your arrival date.
When should Boston snowbirds schedule car shipping to Florida?
Book three to six weeks ahead for a southbound move between late September and December, and for a northbound move in April or early May. Those are the two peak windows on this corridor - New England sends vehicles south earlier than the Midwest because the first nor'easter can arrive before Thanksgiving. Outside the peaks, one to two weeks of notice is usually enough.
Can an auto transporter pick up inside my Boston neighborhood?
In the suburbs, usually yes. The Route 128 and I-495 belt communities - Newton, Wellesley, Weston, Dedham, Framingham, Burlington and their neighbors - have driveways and streets a full-size carrier can work on, though mature oaks and maples sometimes hang below a transporter's 13-foot-6 height. In Boston proper, the North End, Beacon Hill, Back Bay and South End have narrow blocks, tight corners and on-street parking that make curbside loading impractical, so a nearby meeting point is normally the plan there. We confirm this before dispatch, not on pickup day.
Can you deliver a vehicle to a gated community in Naples?
Often, but the delivery plan depends on the destination community. Before a truck leaves the Boston area, we ask the receiving resident to confirm commercial-vehicle rules with the Florida gatehouse. If the rig is restricted, driver and customer meet at an agreed safe location nearby.
What happens if the carrier cannot enter my community?
For the Boston route, we coordinate a safe, legal meeting point close by - commonly a large retail lot, a wide commercial frontage road or a community entrance with room to stage. There is no extra charge for meeting nearby, and it is agreed in advance rather than improvised at the gate.
Is open or enclosed transport better for this trip?
Open transport is the right choice for most daily-driven sedans, SUVs and trucks, and it is what the majority of Boston to Southwest Florida shipments use. Enclosed transport is worth the premium for exotic, classic, collector, low-clearance and high-value vehicles, and enclosed trailers are smaller, so they can often reach entrances a ten-car open carrier cannot.
How does River Valley Auto Transport verify the carrier transporting my vehicle?
For a Boston shipment, we verify the assigned carrier’s federal authority, safety status and insurer-issued coverage before releasing pickup details. The driver and customer then record vehicle condition on the bill of lading at both ends of the trip.
